Star-spangled summer races can keep you motivated

The heat and dew point at 6:30 this morning, 76 and 69, respectively, was like a hard slap on the back, a reminder of how much more motivated I need to be to keep at it in the summer. Felt like my lungs were wrapped in Saran Wrap.

Math comes into play here. I add the humidity and dew point. Any sum higher than 140 means that it's going to be a slog.

Winter? Piece of cake. Again, I have a magic formula: temperature minus wind chill. I brave the elements until it hits negative numbers.

But, back to summer. Some motivation to carry on comes from the star-spangled schedule of races coming up.

  • First is the GO! St. Louis All-American 5K and fun run on Father's Day. The flat, downhill 5K course starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Kirkwood YMCA and ends near the Webster Y. The 1-mile fun run starts and ends at the finishing line at 8:30. Shuttle buses get runners back to the start area. GO! awards pies to age-group winners. The course is designed for setting a PR. Registration for the 5K is $30 through June 13, $35 from June 14-16. Registration for the fun run is $15 through June 13, $20 thereafter.
  • Then comes another downhill run, Big River's Macklind Mile on June 29. The family and friends race begins at 8 a.m, followed by competitive runs for men and women, then an elite field, and a quarter-mile for kids. Stick around for the concert and party.Registration is $20 through June 26, $25 after that. Kids' registration is $10. An online service fee is extra.
  • Finally, the Freedom Four Miler and fun run serve as a kickoff to Fair St. Louis at 7 a.m. July 4. Runners will pass by the icons: Arch, Old Cathedral, Old Courthouse and Busch Stadium. Registration for the 4-mile run is $30 by July 2, $35 thereafter. The fun run costs $15.
